Brits warned of 'swimmers ear' risk

Brits contemplating taking a dip in a swimming pool to cool down from the summer sun have been warned about a condition called 'swimmers ear'.

Research has found that swimming pools can often be places in which bugs and bacteria can thrive and as a result swimmers can often get a painful outer ear infection which is known as swimmers ear, from the unclean water.

Ear specialist Rosemary Rodgers, from Ear Care Services, said: "Swimmers ear is a common complaint especially in older children and adults who swim regularly or get unclean water in their ears, for that reason people often get it while on holiday."

She added that sufferers may experience redness and swelling inside the ear canal which may become itchy and that keeping the ear dry is important.

Although many holidaymakers may take a first aid kit with them, taking out a decent travel insurance policy that covers illnesses and injury may take some stress away from a holiday.
